Baby Names by Nakshatra

The namakaran syllable for every nakshatra pada, with 413 names that genuinely begin with them and what each means. All 27 birth stars.

How this works

In the namakaran rite the child's name begins with the syllable assigned to the pada of the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Twenty-seven nakshatras, four padas each - 108 syllables in all. Pick your nakshatra below.

About these lists

Every name really does begin with the syllable it is filed under - that is checked automatically, not by eye. A few syllables begin almost no name in current use; those lists are short or absent, and the page says so. Padding them with near-misses would have been easy and would have left you unable to tell which entries were real.

Frequently asked

What is a naming syllable?
Each pada of each nakshatra carries a syllable in the tradition. The child's formal name is begun with the syllable belonging to the pada the Moon was in at birth.
How do I find my nakshatra and pada?
From the birth date, time and place. The free nakshatra calculator gives both. The time matters - the Moon crosses one pada in about six hours.
