What a yoga is, and what it is not
A yoga is a named condition on planets - a specific placement, ownership or angle that the classical texts singled out and gave a name. It is a description of one feature of a chart, not a verdict on a life. Almost every yoga below is met by a measurable share of all births, and several are met by more than half. The condition is stated for each one so that claim is checkable rather than something you have to take on trust.
Why the frequency is printed next to the promise
Most of what is written about yogas states the promise and stops. Gaja Kesari needs Jupiter in one of four houses from the Moon, so roughly one chart in three has it; at least one of the three named Vipreet forms appears in more than half of all charts. Those numbers do not make the yogas meaningless - they make them modifiers rather than explanations. A yoga tells you something about the shape of a chart, and the planets involved still have to be in good condition for it to amount to much.
How to read this list
The yogas are grouped by what they turn on: the planet's own dignity, a relationship between house lords, what flanks the Sun or the Moon, or a property of the whole chart at once. Six have full pages here and six more are covered in the glossary; for the rest, the condition stated is the complete rule our engine checks. Running your own chart will tell you which ones are present and, for each, the specific reason it fired.

Akhanda Samrajya Yoga
Jupiter rules the 2nd, 5th, or 11th and occupies a kendra.

- How many yogas are there in Vedic astrology?
- There is no fixed number - the classical texts between them name several hundred, many of which overlap. This page covers the 55 our chart engine checks, drawn from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Phaladeepika and Saravali.
- Which yoga is the most powerful?
- The texts give no single ranking. Dharma-Karmadhipati, formed by the 9th and 10th lords, is the one most consistently described as powerful, but its effect still depends on the condition of the two planets involved.
- Can a chart have no yogas at all?
- In practice this is very unusual. Several of the 55 - the Sankhya yogas in particular - are defined by how many signs the seven grahas occupy, and exactly one of those always applies to every chart.
