Antardasha (अंतर्दशा)

A sub-period inside a Mahadasha - the second level of the dasha timeline, also called bhukti.

What it means

Every Mahadasha divides into nine Antardashas, one for each graha, in the same fixed order and in proportion to the planets' Vimshottari years. A Saturn Mahadasha of nineteen years opens with a Saturn-Saturn Antardasha, then Saturn-Mercury, and so on.

How it is read

This is the level most readings actually work at. A Mahadasha sets the register of a decade or two; the Antardasha inside it is what varies year to year, and the combination of the two lords - how they sit relative to each other in the chart - is what an astrologer reads.

What to watch for

Subdivision continues: Pratyantardasha below Antardasha, and further still. Each level narrows the window, but the confidence does not increase with the precision - a chart cast from an uncertain birth time cannot support a claim about a particular fortnight.
