Hora (होरा)

A planetary hour - the day divided into 24 parts, each ruled by one of the seven visible grahas.

What it means

The period from sunrise to the next sunrise is divided into 24 horas. The first hora of the day belongs to the planet that rules that weekday - Sun on Sunday, Moon on Monday - and the rest follow the Chaldean order: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, repeating.

How it is read

This ordering is also where the names of the weekdays come from, in Sanskrit and in the European languages alike. The 25th hora falls to the lord of the next weekday, which is exactly why the sequence of days runs as it does.

What to watch for

Horas are used for small elections rather than large ones - a good hour to make a call, start a study session or begin a purchase. They are not equal to clock hours, since they divide the actual daylight-to-daylight interval, which varies through the year.
