What it means
Muhurta is electional astrology: the branch that picks a start time. A wedding, a housewarming, a first day of school or the signing of a deal is given a window chosen so that the panchang limbs, the Moon's nakshatra, and the relevant houses are as supportive as the calendar allows.
How it is read
The technical unit is also called a muhurta - one thirtieth of a day, roughly 48 minutes - and the day is divided into thirty of them, some named and traditionally favoured or avoided. Inauspicious stretches such as Rahu Kaal are excluded first, then the remaining windows are ranked.
What to watch for
A muhurta is chosen against the general calendar unless a birth chart is supplied, in which case it can also be checked against the individual's running dasha and Moon. Regional traditions differ substantially on which windows count, so two almanacs can disagree in good faith.
