Glossary

Uccha (उच्च)

Exaltation - the sign in which a planet is considered to act at its clearest and strongest.

What it means

Each graha has one sign of exaltation and, opposite it, one of debilitation. The Sun is exalted in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Pisces and Saturn in Libra. Each also has an exact degree of deepest exaltation.

How it is read

An exalted planet is read as acting without obstruction - it does what it naturally does, fully. That is a statement about clarity of expression rather than about good fortune: an exalted Saturn is a thoroughly Saturnine Saturn, which means discipline and limitation delivered at full strength.

What to watch for

Exaltation is one input among several. A planet can be exalted and still weak by other measures - combust, in a Dusthana, or with its dasha never running in a lifetime - which is why Shadbala exists to weigh the factors together rather than ranking a chart on dignity alone.
