What it means
The Dusthanas are the 6th (illness, debt, enemies, service), the 8th (upheaval, inheritance, the hidden) and the 12th (expense, foreign lands, withdrawal, sleep). A planet placed there is said to be under strain.
How it is read
The classical logic is that these houses consume rather than build. But each also has a constructive face: the 6th is the house of overcoming, which is why it is read for competitive work and recovery; the 8th governs research and inheritance; the 12th governs retreat, and is the house most associated with spiritual practice.
What to watch for
These are the terms most likely to frighten someone reading their own chart for the first time. A Dusthana placement is not a verdict - it describes friction and where a life is likely to be worked out the hard way, and most charts have planets in at least one of the three.
