Is the 3rd house a good house?
Classically the 3rd is upachaya. That vocabulary does more work than "good" or "bad": kendras are the four angular houses that give a chart its structure, trikonas are the trines that carry grace and dharma, dusthanas are the difficult 6th, 8th and 12th, and upachayas are the houses that IMPROVE with age and effort rather than arriving finished. As an upachaya it is one of the few houses where a malefic is traditionally WELCOME: struggle here compounds into competence, and the reading of this house at forty is rarely the reading at twenty.
The 3rd–9th axis
No house is read alone. The 3rd always sits opposite the 9th, and the two behave as one axis: whatever occupies or aspects one has a say in the other, because every planet aspects the 7th from itself. In practice that means a question about the 3rd that ignores the 9th has looked at half the picture - the pair describes a single tension, not two unrelated topics, and the balance between them is usually where the interesting part of the reading is.
