Bhava (भाव)

One of the twelve houses of a chart - the life areas that planets act upon.

What it means

A Bhava is a house: one of twelve divisions counted from the Lagna, each standing for an area of life. The 1st is the self and body, the 4th home and mother, the 7th partnership, the 10th career and public standing, and so on around the wheel.

How it is read

Where a Rashi says how a planet behaves, a Bhava says where it acts. Saturn in Capricorn describes a disciplined, structural Saturn; Saturn in the 7th house says that discipline plays out in partnership. Reading a placement means holding both at once.

What to watch for

Houses are also grouped: the Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are the pillars, the Trikonas (1, 5, 9) the fortunate trines, and the Dusthanas (6, 8, 12) the difficult ones. Those groupings do most of the interpretive work, and no single house placement decides an outcome by itself.
