How your Ishta Devata is derived from your date of birth
Everything starts from your date, time and place of birth: they fix the chart, and the chart fixes the Atmakaraka - the planet at the highest degree in its sign. That planet's sign in the Navamsa (D9) is your Karakamsa, and Jaimini's Upadesa Sutras read the 12th sign from the Karakamsa - the Jivan-muktamsa, the house of liberation - for the deity that carries the soul toward moksha.
The calculator resolves that sign in strict order: first a planet occupying it in the Navamsa; failing that, a planet casting rasi drishti (sign aspect) on it; failing that, the sign's lord. What that procedure yields is a graha. Naming a deity from the graha is a separate mapping step with more than one accepted scheme - so the result shows every mapping with its source instead of choosing one for you.
How to read your result
The tool returns one planet and the deity traditionally associated with it. The planet is not chosen from your Sun sign or your birth day - it is derived, through two steps, from the chart's Atmakaraka.
Read it as a direction for practice, not a label. The Ishta Devata is the form tradition suggests a person turns toward for spiritual work; it says nothing about what you must believe, and it does not compete with whatever deity you already keep.
If the result surprises you, check your Atmakaraka first - everything here follows from it, and the Atmakaraka is decided by exact degrees.
A worked example
In the chart used across these pages, the Atmakaraka is the Moon at 25°11' of Scorpio. Step one takes that planet into the D12 (Dwadasamsa) chart and finds the 12th house from where it lands - the house tradition associates with moksha and what lies beyond the visible life.
Step two takes the lord of that 12th house. That planet is the Ishta Devata, and its associated deity is what the tool reports.
The chain matters because each link is a real computation: a D12 division, a house count, and a lordship. Change the birth time enough to move the Atmakaraka and the entire chain resolves somewhere else.
Why this is harder than it looks
Most sites that offer an "Ishta Devata" pick from the Sun sign, the birth weekday, or the Moon sign. Those are not the classical derivation and will disagree with this one.
The Jaimini method requires three things in sequence, and a site that has not implemented divisional charts cannot do it: rank the eight karakas by degree to find the Atmakaraka, compute the D12 chart, then find the 12th from the Atmakaraka's D12 position and take its lord. We compute all three from the ephemeris.
That dependency is also the honest caveat - an error anywhere in the chain propagates, and the chain starts with the karaka ranking, which is the most birth-time-sensitive step on this site.
What this does not tell you
It is not a prescription and not an exclusion. Tradition treats the Ishta Devata as a suggested door, not the only one, and nothing here says a practice you already hold is wrong.
It is also not a prediction of anything. There is no outcome attached to this result - no timing, no fortune, no warning.
And it is only as reliable as your birth time. Because it descends from the Atmakaraka, a chart whose top karakas sit within a degree of each other can resolve to a different deity on a twenty-minute correction. The karaka tool shows those margins.

- The personal deity - the form of the divine a particular soul is drawn to, and in the Jaimini framing, the one that carries it toward moksha. It's a devotional relationship rather than a chart placement, which is why the calculation below is a pointer, not a verdict.
- Which rule does this calculator use?
- The structure is Jaimini's Upadesa Sutras (1.2.68–1.2.82): the 12th sign counted from your Karakamsa is the Jivan-muktamsa, the house of liberation, and the indicator is read from there. Precedence is a planet occupying that sign in the navamsa; failing that, a planet casting sign-aspect (rasi drishti) on it; failing that, the sign's lord. Note that what this yields is a graha - not a deity. Naming the deity is a second step.
- Why does the result lead with a planet rather than a deity?
- Because that's what the calculation actually produces, and the gap between the two is where most Ishta Devata calculators go wrong. The Jaimini procedure identifies a graha. Mapping that graha to a named form is a separate question with more than one accepted answer, so we show you the graha as the finding and every mapping we can source underneath it.
- Why do other calculators give me a different deity?
- Usually because they're using a different mapping and not telling you. Mars is Narasimha in the Dashavatara scheme, Skanda in the adhidevata lists, and Hanuman in several living lineages - all for the same Mars. Ketu is Matsya in one and Ganesha in another; Saturn is Kurma, Shiva or Yama depending on the source. On top of that, some teachers refine the reading through the D24 chart before the D9, and some reverse the counting direction when the Atmakaraka sits in a feminine sign. We use the D9 and zodiacal counting, and we print every mapping rather than choosing one.
- Which of the deity names is the right one for me?
- That isn't a question arithmetic can answer, and we'd be lying if we picked. The classical position is that your Ishta Devata is the form you are already drawn to; the chart is read to confirm or clarify it, not to overrule devotion. If one of the names on your result already means something to you, that's the strongest signal on the page. If none do, take the graha to a teacher rather than to a recalculation.
- How much does birth time matter here?
- A great deal. The whole derivation starts from the Atmakaraka, which is the planet furthest into its sign by exact degree - a few hours can hand that title to a different planet, and every step after it changes. With an unknown time this tool reads the chart at noon and says so, but the result shouldn't be acted on.
