- What is the Karakamsa?
- The Karakamsa is the navamsa (D9) sign occupied by your Atmakaraka - the planet that has travelled furthest into its sign. In Jaimini astrology it's treated as a second lagna, read for the soul's direction.
- What is the Swamsha?
- The house of your natal (D1) chart that the Karakamsa sign falls in. Most Jaimini readings frame their analysis from the Swamsha rather than from the D9 chart in isolation.
- Does this tell me my Ishta Devata?
- Not on this page - the Ishta Devata is read from the 12th sign counted from the Karakamsa, which is a further step. We now have a separate tool for it at /tools/ishta-devata, following Jaimini's Upadesa Sutras for the rule and BPHS chapter 2 for the deity table, and it shows the whole derivation and names the traditions that read it differently. The Karakamsa and Swamsha here are the inputs to it.
- Why does birth time matter?
- Twice over. The Atmakaraka is decided by exact planetary degree, so a shift of hours can change which planet holds the title; and the Swamsha house depends on your ascendant, which moves about a sign every two hours.
- How do I check this myself?
- Both steps are mechanical. Find the planet with the highest degree within its sign - that's your Atmakaraka. Look up its navamsa sign on any D9 chart - that's your Karakamsa. Nothing interpretive happens in between.
