What it means
Every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, so a planet in the 1st looks at the 7th. Mars additionally aspects the 4th and 8th from itself, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th. These special aspects are one-directional, which surprises readers used to Western aspects.
How it is read
Drishti matters because it lets a planet act on a house it never occupies. A Jupiter in the 1st casting its 5th aspect onto the 5th house is doing real interpretive work there, and a house with no planet in it is still read through whatever aspects reach it and through its lord.
What to watch for
Vedic aspects are counted whole-sign rather than by exact degree, so there is no orb in the Western sense. Some traditions also use rashi drishti, a sign-to-sign aspect scheme, which is a separate system - mixing the two without saying which is being used is a common source of contradictory readings.
