Glossary

Yoga (योग)

A named combination of planets or houses that classical texts treat as producing a specific effect.

What it means

In chart terms a Yoga is a recognised pattern - Gajakesari when Jupiter sits in a Kendra from the Moon, the Pancha Mahapurusha yogas when one of five planets is strong in a Kendra in its own or exaltation sign, Raja yogas when Kendra and Trikona lords connect. Hundreds are catalogued.

How it is read

A yoga is a description of a configuration, not an event. Classical texts pair each with an expected effect, but whether it delivers depends on the strength of the planets involved, whether their dasha periods ever run, and what else in the chart supports or undercuts it.

What to watch for

Beware the word in isolation: 'yoga' also names one of the five limbs of the panchang, an entirely different daily calculation, and popular writing routinely announces spectacular yogas that turn out to be common. If a claimed yoga is not named and its condition stated, it cannot be checked.
