Guna Milan (गुण मिलान)

The eight-fold compatibility score used in Vedic matchmaking, out of a maximum of 36 points.

What it means

Guna Milan compares the two Moon nakshatras across eight koots, each worth a different number of points: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7 and Nadi 8 - thirty-six in total. The conventional threshold for a recommended match is 18.

How it is read

The weighting is the part most people miss. Nadi and Bhakoot alone carry fifteen of the thirty-six points, so a pair can score well on six koots and still fall short. Both of those koots also have well-established cancellation rules, which a bare score does not show.

What to watch for

The whole calculation rests on the Moon's nakshatra and nothing else - it does not look at Mangal dosha, the 7th house, the Navamsa or the running dashas, all of which a full compatibility reading would weigh. Treating the number as a verdict is the single most common misuse of Vedic astrology in practice.
