Navamsa (नवांश)

The D9 divisional chart - each sign cut into nine parts, read for marriage and for a planet's underlying strength.

What it means

The Navamsa divides every 30-degree sign into nine sub-divisions of 3 degrees 20 minutes each, and re-maps them onto the twelve signs. The result is a second chart, derived entirely from the first, that magnifies fine differences in planetary position.

How it is read

It is read for two things above all: marriage and partnership, and the real strength of a planet. A planet that looks weak in the birth chart but sits well in the Navamsa is treated as having hidden support - the classical term is vargottama when it holds the same sign in both.

What to watch for

Because the Navamsa subdivides by 3 degrees 20 minutes, it is far more sensitive to birth-time error than the main chart. A twenty-minute uncertainty can move planets into different Navamsa signs, so treat D9-based marriage readings as provisional unless the birth time is well established.
