What it means
The Lagna, or ascendant, is the degree of the zodiac that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the exact minute and place you were born. It becomes the 1st house of your chart, and every other house is counted from it.
How it is read
Because the horizon moves through all twelve signs in roughly 24 hours, the Lagna changes about every two hours - which is why an accurate birth time matters far more than an accurate birth date. Two people born the same day in the same city can have entirely different Lagnas and therefore entirely different house layouts.
What to watch for
In practice the Lagna is read as the lens: the body, temperament and the angle from which you meet life. It is not a prediction, and a chart cast from a guessed time will place it wrong - if your time of birth is uncertain, treat the Lagna-dependent parts of any reading with real caution.
