What the 8th house means
In Vedic astrology, the 8th house (bhava) governs depth, transformation, shared resources, and the hidden. The planets sitting in it - and the planet that rules it - shape how this part of life unfolds for you.
Is the 8th house a good house?
Classically the 8th is dusthana. That vocabulary does more work than "good" or "bad": kendras are the four angular houses that give a chart its structure, trikonas are the trines that carry grace and dharma, dusthanas are the difficult 6th, 8th and 12th, and upachayas are the houses that IMPROVE with age and effort rather than arriving finished. Being a dusthana does not make this house a misfortune - it makes it the house of things that are worked through rather than enjoyed, and a strong planet here often describes someone who has genuinely dealt with that territory.
The 8th–2nd axis
No house is read alone. The 8th always sits opposite the 2nd, and the two behave as one axis: whatever occupies or aspects one has a say in the other, because every planet aspects the 7th from itself. In practice that means a question about the 8th that ignores the 2nd has looked at half the picture - the pair describes a single tension, not two unrelated topics, and the balance between them is usually where the interesting part of the reading is.
Who rules your 8th house?
There is no single answer, and this is the most common misunderstanding about houses. In the NATURAL zodiac the 8th corresponds to Scorpio, ruled by Mars - which is where the house's general significations come from. But in YOUR chart the 8th holds whichever sign falls there counting from your ascendant, so its lord is different for each of the twelve ascendants. That lord, and wherever it sits, carries this house's affairs across the chart. Reading the 8th therefore means reading two things: what sits in it, and where its lord has gone.
