Vimshottari dasha

Ketu Mahadasha (केतु)

Seven years of subtraction — detachment, endings, and an inward turn that often looks like loss before it looks like freedom.

What this period brings

Ketu's seven years tend to remove rather than add. Attachments loosen, ambitions that once felt urgent go quiet, and interest turns toward whatever cannot be bought — study, solitude, practice, or simply a smaller life. It commonly follows a long Venus period, which is part of why it feels so abrupt: twenty years of accumulation give way to seven of release.

Where it tends to go well

Research, spiritual practice, healing work, and anything that rewards going deep instead of wide. People often do their most original work here precisely because they stop performing for an audience.

Where it asks for care

Status, negotiation and material expansion. Ketu has no interest in them, so effort spent chasing recognition tends to return little — not as punishment, just as indifference.

The nine antardashas

Every mahadasha divides into nine sub-periods (antardasha or bhukti), running in the same fixed order and starting with the lord's own. Each is Ketu's 7 years times the sub-lord's share of 120 — so the table below is arithmetic, not opinion. Your own dates depend on the Moon's nakshatra at birth, which the calculator works out.

How to read this honestly

Ketu is the most misrepresented dasha in popular astrology. It is a period of reduction, not of catastrophe, and its results depend heavily on Ketu's house, sign and aspects in your own chart. A seven-year label tells you the theme; the chart tells you the story.

Frequently asked

How long is Ketu Mahadasha?
Seven years, the shortest of the nine along with Mars. It is followed by Venus, the longest at twenty.
Is Ketu Mahadasha always bad?
No. It is a period of detachment and inward focus, which is difficult for material ambition and genuinely favourable for study, research and practice. Where Ketu sits in your chart matters more than the label.
