What this period brings
Shani's nineteen years are about what survives effort and time. Progress is slow and rarely feels generous while it is happening, but what gets built is built properly. Work, duty, elders, and the consequences of earlier choices all come due.
Where it tends to go well
Long-horizon work, institutions, labour and service, research, and any field where seniority is earned rather than granted.
Where it asks for care
Speed and shortcuts. Delay is Saturn's principal instrument, and the periods that feel worst are usually the ones where something was being forced.
The nine antardashas
Every mahadasha divides into nine sub-periods (antardasha or bhukti), running in the same fixed order and starting with the lord's own. Each is Saturn's 19 years times the sub-lord's share of 120 — so the table below is arithmetic, not opinion. Your own dates depend on the Moon's nakshatra at birth, which the calculator works out.
| Antardasha | Length |
|---|---|
| Saturn – Saturn | 3 yr |
| Saturn – Mercury | 2 yr 8 mo |
| Saturn – Ketu | 1 yr 1 mo |
| Saturn – Venus | 3 yr 2 mo |
| Saturn – Sun | 11 mo |
| Saturn – Moon | 1 yr 7 mo |
| Saturn – Mars | 1 yr 1 mo |
| Saturn – Rahu | 2 yr 10 mo |
| Saturn – Jupiter | 2 yr 6 mo |
How to read this honestly
Saturn's dasha has the worst reputation and, in retrospect, is often the one people credit for their competence. It is not punishment; it is the removal of anything that was only working because conditions were easy. Note it is separate from Sade Sati, which is a transit rather than a dasha.
Frequently asked
- How long is Saturn Mahadasha?
- Nineteen years — the second longest after Venus's twenty.
- Is Saturn Mahadasha the same as Sade Sati?
- No. Sade Sati is a TRANSIT — Saturn passing through the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses from your natal Moon, about seven and a half years. Saturn Mahadasha is a nineteen-year period in the Vimshottari dasha cycle. They can overlap, but they are different things.
