What it means
The Kendras are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses: self, home, partnership and career. They are called the pillars because they carry the visible, load-bearing parts of a life, and a planet placed in one of them gets a platform to act from.
How it is read
Classical texts treat Kendra placement as strengthening for most planets - the Vishnu sthanas, in one common phrasing. The notable wrinkle is that the natural benefics gain less from a Kendra than the natural malefics do, and Jupiter and Venus are sometimes said to lose potency there, a rule known as kendradhipati dosha when it applies to house lords.
What to watch for
Kendra strength is about prominence, not about outcome. A malefic well placed in a Kendra is prominent, which can read as either capable or difficult depending on the rest of the chart - the grouping tells you the volume, not the content.
