Trikona (त्रिकोण)

The trine houses - 1, 5 and 9 - classically the most fortunate positions in a chart.

What it means

The Trikonas are the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, spaced 120 degrees apart. The 5th carries intelligence, creativity and children; the 9th carries fortune, teachers and belief; the 1st belongs to both this group and the Kendras.

How it is read

Classical texts call these the Lakshmi sthanas and treat any planet there as supported. The strongest classical combinations, the Raja yogas, are formed when a Kendra lord and a Trikona lord connect - by conjunction, by mutual aspect, or by exchange of signs.

What to watch for

'Fortunate' here means favourably disposed, not guaranteed. A Trikona placement describes a channel through which things tend to flow more easily; it does not override a difficult dasha or an afflicted house lord, and reading it as a promise is the most common way these terms get oversold.
