House

The 1st house in Vedic astrology

The 1st house (bhava) governs the self, body, and how you meet the world. What the 1st house means in your birth chart, and what each planet does when placed there.

What the 1st house means

In Vedic astrology, the 1st house (bhava) governs the self, body, and how you meet the world. The planets sitting in it - and the planet that rules it - shape how this part of life unfolds for you.

Is the 1st house a good house?

Classically the 1st is kendra and trikona. That vocabulary does more work than "good" or "bad": kendras are the four angular houses that give a chart its structure, trikonas are the trines that carry grace and dharma, dusthanas are the difficult 6th, 8th and 12th, and upachayas are the houses that IMPROVE with age and effort rather than arriving finished. It is one of the supportive houses, which is why planets placed here are read with less suspicion than the same planets in the 6th, 8th or 12th.

The 1st–7th axis

No house is read alone. The 1st always sits opposite the 7th, and the two behave as one axis: whatever occupies or aspects one has a say in the other, because every planet aspects the 7th from itself. In practice that means a question about the 1st that ignores the 7th has looked at half the picture - the pair describes a single tension, not two unrelated topics, and the balance between them is usually where the interesting part of the reading is.

Who rules your 1st house?

There is no single answer, and this is the most common misunderstanding about houses. In the NATURAL zodiac the 1st corresponds to Aries, ruled by Mars - which is where the house's general significations come from. But in YOUR chart the 1st holds whichever sign falls there counting from your ascendant, so its lord is different for each of the twelve ascendants. That lord, and wherever it sits, carries this house's affairs across the chart. Reading the 1st therefore means reading two things: what sits in it, and where its lord has gone.
