What Pitra dosha is
Pitra dosha - literally the ancestors' blemish - is read as karma inherited rather than made: something left undone on the paternal line that surfaces in the descendant's chart. The 9th house carries father, lineage and dharma, and the Sun carries the paternal principle, so the dosha is defined by afflictions to those two.
How it is detected
Astroniq applies the rule set most widely cited in Indian almanacs, weighted rather than binary. Five conditions are checked: the Sun conjunct Rahu, Ketu or Saturn (5 points); an afflicted Sun in the 9th house (4 points); Rahu or Ketu in the 9th house (3 points); the 9th lord placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th (2 points); and a debilitated Sun in Libra (1 point). The dosha is reported as present at a total of 4 or more out of 15, and as strong at 8 or more. Other lineages weigh these differently, and a source that gives you a yes/no with no rule stated is not showing its working.
What it actually says
The honest reading is that these are afflictions to the houses of father and lineage - which classical texts associate with the paternal line, and which in practice describe a chart where authority, father-figures and inherited expectation are a live theme. It says nothing about anyone's conduct, and it is not a diagnosis of anything that has happened to your family.
Cancellation - read this before anything else
There is no single named cancellation for Pitra dosha the way Mangal dosha has one. What mitigates it in classical reading is strength elsewhere: a well-placed 9th lord, a strong Jupiter as the natural karaka of dharma, or benefic aspects onto the 9th house. A low score - 4 or 5 of the 15 - is a mild reading, and treating it as equivalent to a strong one is the most common misuse.
What the tradition prescribes
• Shraddha and tarpan for the ancestors, particularly during Pitru Paksha • Charity and food offerings made in the ancestors' name rather than one's own • Sun-strengthening practice - Surya Arghya at sunrise, the Aditya Hridayam • Care of and reconciliation with living elders, which the tradition treats as the same obligation
Frequently asked
- Is Pitra dosha serious?
- It is a weighted reading, not a verdict. Astroniq reports it as present from 4 points out of 15 and strong from 8, so a chart that just crosses the line is describing a mild pattern. No classical text treats it as a prediction of misfortune, and it is common enough that a large fraction of charts show some score.
- Does Pitra dosha affect marriage or children?
- Popular writing often links it to delays in marriage or difficulty with children, usually by way of the 5th house. The engine's rule set does not test the 5th house at all - it tests the Sun and the 9th. Anyone claiming a specific outcome from this dosha alone is going beyond what the configuration says.
- How do I know if I have Pitra dosha?
- You need an accurate birth chart: the rules depend on the 9th house from your Lagna, which needs your birth time and place. Cast a free chart and the Sun's placement, the 9th house and its lord are all visible there.
