Doshas

Nadi dosha (नाड़ी दोष)

The matching fault that costs the most points - both partners sharing the same Nadi, worth 8 of the 36 gunas.

What Nadi dosha is

Nadi is one of the eight koots of Guna Milan and carries the heaviest weight: 8 points of the 36. It sorts each person into Adi, Madhya or Antya by their Moon nakshatra, and the classical reading ties it to health constitution and progeny. Nadi dosha is the case where both partners fall in the same one.

How it is detected

The test is mechanical: if both charts have the same Nadi, the koot scores zero out of 8, and that zero is what the dosha means. There is no partial state on the way there - Nadi rarely scores in between - which is why a pair can look fine on the other seven koots and still land under the conventional 18-point threshold. Nadi is decided entirely by the Moon's nakshatra, so it needs a birth time accurate enough to fix the Moon.

What it actually says

It is a compatibility signal, not a medical one. The classical association with health and progeny is why it carries eight points, but nothing in the calculation examines either partner's actual health, and no responsible reading turns a koot score into a claim about a couple's children. It also looks at exactly one factor - the Moon nakshatra - and ignores the 7th house, the Navamsa, Mangal dosha and the running dashas.

Cancellation - read this before anything else

Two cancellations apply, and both are common. The first is when both partners share the same nakshatra but sit in different padas. The second is when the two Moon signs are in 1, 5 or 9 from each other - a mutual trine. On cancellation Astroniq restores half marks, 4 of the 8, which is the canonical partial restore rather than a full pass. Note what is NOT a cancellation: same Nadi with different nakshatras is the textbook Nadi-dosha pattern, not an exemption, though it is often reported as one.

What the tradition prescribes

• Check the cancellations first - a cancelled Nadi dosha needs no remedy • Read the full chart comparison rather than the guna total: the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the Navamsa • Maha Mrityunjaya Japa, the remedy the tradition most often prescribes here • Nadi Nivaran Puja, performed before the wedding in the regions that observe it

Frequently asked

Can a couple marry with Nadi dosha?
Classical practice treats it as a serious point against a match, and also gives two well-established cancellations that a large share of couples meet. Check whether either applies before treating the score as final - and remember that Guna Milan looks only at the Moon nakshatra, so a full compatibility reading may reach a different conclusion.
How many points does Nadi dosha cost?
All 8 of Nadi's points, which is the largest single koot in the 36-point system. If the dosha is cancelled, Astroniq restores 4 of the 8 - the canonical half-marks restore - which is often enough to move a match back over the conventional 18-point line.
Is Nadi dosha about health or children?
That is the classical association behind its weighting, and it is why the koot exists. But the calculation only compares two Moon nakshatras. It does not examine anyone's health, and treating a koot score as information about a couple's future children is not something the calculation supports.
