A yogakaraka is a planet that, from a given ascendant, rules both a kendra - the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th - and a trikona - the 1st, 5th or 9th. Owning one of each joins the houses of action to the houses of fortune, and the classical texts treat such a planet as the chart's engine.
How it is read
It is a structural accident of the zodiac, so only some ascendants get one. Saturn is the yogakaraka for Taurus and Libra; Mars for Cancer and Leo; Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius. Notice that in two of those three cases the planet is a natural malefic - which is the clearest demonstration that function beats nature.
What to watch for
The reading turns on condition rather than presence. A yogakaraka that is strong, unafflicted and well-placed is the most reliable thing in the chart. The same planet combust, retrograde in a dusthana or hemmed between malefics tends to promise and withhold, and because so much is routed through it, its weakness is felt more widely than another planet's would be.
