In mainstream Vedic astrology the ascendant decides which sign occupies the 1st house, so a Leo rising chart puts Leo first. Lal Kitab does not do this. The houses are permanently numbered against the natural zodiac: Aries is always the 1st house, Taurus always the 2nd, Pisces always the 12th, for everyone. What varies between charts is only which planets fall where.
Why the system does it
The effect is to make the houses a fixed board and the planets the only moving pieces. Every rule in Lal Kitab can then be stated as 'this planet in this house', without needing to account for the ascendant at all. It is what lets the tradition be taught as a table of a few hundred positions rather than as a method of synthesis, and it is why Lal Kitab readings are so much more mechanical than Parashari ones.
What it costs
The ascendant carries real information in classical practice - it is why two people born the same day differ - and Lal Kitab discards it as a house-setter. A Lal Kitab chart of two people born hours apart on the same day is often identical. Practitioners accept this because they read the system as being about karmic debts and their remedies rather than about individual temperament, but it is a genuine loss and worth knowing before treating the two systems as interchangeable.

- Not for setting the houses. Aries is the 1st house in every Lal Kitab chart regardless of what was rising at your birth. The ascendant still exists in your birth data and matters in Parashari reading, but Lal Kitab does not use it to number the houses.
- Why does my Lal Kitab chart look nothing like my kundli?
- Because the houses are numbered differently. A planet in your Parashari 5th house can be in the Lal Kitab 9th, simply because the two systems anchor house 1 to different signs. Neither chart is wrong.
