Gaja Kesari Yoga (गजकेसरी योग)

Jupiter in a quadrant from the Moon - the most commonly cited of the named yogas, and the most commonly overstated.

What it means

Gaja Kesari Yoga forms when Jupiter sits in a kendra from the Moon - the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house counted from wherever the Moon is. The name pairs the elephant and the lion, and the classical promise is reputation, discernment and support from people of standing.

How it is read

The reason to be careful is arithmetic. Four of twelve positions satisfy the condition, so roughly one chart in three has it on the bare rule, and a yoga present in a third of the population cannot by itself explain an unusual life. The stricter readings add conditions the popular version drops: that neither planet be combust, debilitated or in a dusthana, and that Jupiter not be hemmed by malefics.

What to watch for

Read it as a modifier rather than a verdict. Where Jupiter and the Moon are both strong and the rest of the chart supports it, the pairing describes a mind that is trusted and grows by good counsel. Where Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn or the Moon is dark and afflicted, the geometry is still technically there and is worth very little. A yoga is a condition on planets, and the planets still have to be in good shape.
