The exact condition
Hamsa Yoga forms when Jupiter is in its own signs Sagittarius or Pisces, or exalted in Cancer, and that sign falls in a kendra from the Ascendant - the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th. It is the Jupiter member of the Pancha Mahapurusha set, and the one most often quoted, partly because Jupiter is slow: it holds a sign for about a year, so everyone born across a twelve-month stretch shares Jupiter's sign and the yoga then turns entirely on the Ascendant.
How often it actually occurs
Three of twelve signs and four of twelve houses give roughly one chart in twelve. The slowness matters for how the eight percent is distributed: in any year when Jupiter is in Pisces, Sagittarius or Cancer, a third of all births that year have Hamsa, and in the other years almost none do. So it clusters by birth year rather than being sprinkled evenly, which is worth knowing before treating it as a personal distinction.
What it describes, and what weakens it
A dignified Jupiter in a quadrant reads as good judgement, a settled ethical sense and the kind of learning people come to for counsel. The classical objections are combustion, being hemmed by malefics, and navamsa debilitation. One more is worth stating plainly: Jupiter in a kendra is subject to kendradhipati dosha for some ascendants, where ruling a quadrant blunts a natural benefic. Hamsa and that objection can both be true of the same chart, and the texts do not resolve it for you.
