Divisional charts

Akshavedamsa (D45) Chart (अक्षवेदांश)

The paternal-line chart - each sign in forty-fifths, read for conduct, character and what descends from the father's side.

What the D45 chart is read for

The D45 is the D40's counterpart: what comes down the paternal line, and with it conduct and general character. Classical texts pair the two deliberately - one chart per side of the family - and read them together when a trait clearly runs in a family but the D1 does not say which side it came from. Like the D40 it is a confirming chart, not a starting point.

How the D45 is calculated

Each sign divides into forty-five parts of 40'. It is one of the two finest vargas in the classical sixteen, and correspondingly demanding of the birth time.

Reading it alongside the birth chart

Read it as the pair to the D40, after the D1 and the governing varga have been read. Where a family trait is obvious but its source is not, the two together are more articulate than either alone.

What a divisional chart will not tell you

Character is not fixed by a chart. The D45 describes inherited disposition and tendency in conduct; what a person does with that is theirs, and a varga is a poor instrument for moral judgement of anyone.

Frequently asked

What is the Akshavedamsa chart used for?
Conduct, character, and what descends through the paternal line. It is read as the counterpart to the D40's maternal reading.
What is the difference between the D40 and the D45?
They are a deliberate pair - the D40 for the maternal line, the D45 for the paternal. Read together they can show which side of a family a trait descends from.
