Shashtiamsa (D60) Chart (षष्ट्यंश)

The karma chart - each sign in sixtieths, held by classical authority to be the most telling of all the vargas.

What the D60 chart is read for

The D60 is read for the karmic background a life arrives with - the inheritance from before this birth that the other charts describe the working-out of. Parashara ranks it above the rest of the shodasavarga in general importance, and it is used as a final check on any major judgement: a planet that holds up in the D1, its governing varga and the D60 is as well supported as this system gets.

How the D60 is calculated

Each sign divides into sixty parts of 30' - half a degree. The 720 shashtiamsas across the zodiac each carry a classical name and nature, which is what makes the chart readable rather than merely fine.

Reading it alongside the birth chart

Read it last, as confirmation. Its strength is agreement: when the D1, the relevant varga and the D60 all say the same thing, the judgement is about as firm as classical practice allows. When the D60 dissents, the honest reading is that the matter is less settled than it looked.

What a divisional chart will not tell you

Half a degree of arc is about two minutes of birth time. Without a rectified time the D60 is not a deeper reading but a more confident wrong one, and that is the failure mode to guard against with every fine varga.

Frequently asked

Why is the D60 considered the most important varga?
Parashara ranks it highest in general importance among the sixteen. It is read for the karmic background a life arrives with, and used as a final check on any major judgement.
How exact must the birth time be for the D60?
Each shashtiamsa spans 30' of arc - roughly two minutes of birth time. Without a rectified time the D60 gives confidence rather than accuracy, which is worse than not reading it.
