Saptamsa (D7) Chart (सप्तांश)

The chart of children and lineage - each sign in sevenths, read for progeny and what is passed forward.

What the D7 chart is read for

The D7 is read for children and, more broadly, for creative continuation - what a person produces that outlives the producing. It is consulted alongside the 5th house of the D1 for questions about conception, the character of children, and the relationship with them. Its division is the one uneven-looking number in the set: 30 does not divide by 7 into round degrees, so saptamsa boundaries fall at unfamiliar minutes and seconds.

How the D7 is calculated

Each sign divides into seven parts. Because 30° does not divide evenly by seven, each part spans an awkward figure rather than a round one - a reason saptamsa placements are unusually sensitive to birth-time error.

Reading it alongside the birth chart

Read it with the 5th house and its lord in the D1, and with Jupiter. When the D1's 5th is strong but the D7 is troubled, classical practice reads delay and difficulty around children rather than their absence - a distinction worth being careful with, because it is the one people most want collapsed into a yes or no.

What a divisional chart will not tell you

This chart cannot diagnose fertility. Conception is medical, and a chart that looks difficult has no standing against a clinic's findings in either direction - hopeful or discouraging.

Frequently asked

What is the Saptamsa chart used for?
Children and lineage - progeny, their character, and the relationship with them. It is read alongside the 5th house of the birth chart, never on its own.
Why is the D7 sensitive to birth time?
Because 30° does not divide evenly into seven, each saptamsa spans about 4°17', with boundaries at unround minutes. A few minutes of error in the birth time can move a planet across one.
