Divisional charts

Shodasamsa (D16) Chart (षोडशांश)

The chart of vehicles and comforts - each sign in sixteenths, read for possessions and the pleasure actually taken in them.

What the D16 chart is read for

The D16 is read for conveyances and material comfort: vehicles, the home's furnishing, and the more interesting question of whether these things are enjoyed or merely owned. Classical texts also use it for general happiness derived from possessions, which is why it is consulted when a life looks outwardly comfortable and does not feel that way.

How the D16 is calculated

Each sign divides into sixteen parts of 1°52'30". The fractional minute is why D16 boundaries look unfamiliar written out.

Reading it alongside the birth chart

Read the 4th house of the D1 for comfort and the 2nd for possessions, then the D16 for how that comfort is actually experienced. Its most useful reading is the gap between the two charts: a strong 4th with a weak D16 describes having without enjoying.

What a divisional chart will not tell you

The D16 will not tell you when you will buy a car. Purchases are timed by the dasha and by circumstance; a varga describes character and capacity, never a date.

Frequently asked

What is the Shodasamsa chart used for?
Vehicles, comforts and possessions - and whether they are actually enjoyed. It is consulted when a life looks comfortable from outside but does not feel it.
Does the D16 predict buying a vehicle?
No. It describes capacity for comfort and the enjoyment of it. Timing comes from the dasha, and the purchase itself from circumstance and choice.
