Divisional charts

Vimshamsa (D20) Chart (विंशांश)

The chart of spiritual practice - each sign in twentieths, read for upasana, devotion, and the form a practice takes.

What the D20 chart is read for

The D20 is read for religious and spiritual life: worship, devotion, the deity a person is drawn to, and the shape a practice actually takes rather than the one they say they keep. It is the chart behind ishta-devata work, and it is read for progress in sadhana where the D1 can only report that the interest exists.

How the D20 is calculated

Each sign divides into twenty parts of 1°30'. The classical assignments of these parts to deities are what make it usable for upasana questions.

Reading it alongside the birth chart

Read the 9th and 12th houses of the D1, and Jupiter and Ketu, then the D20 for the form. It answers 'what practice' far better than the D1, which tends only to say whether there is an inclination at all.

What a divisional chart will not tell you

No chart can prescribe a religion or promise spiritual attainment. The D20 describes inclination and the form it naturally takes; what is done with that is a matter of conscience, not of longitude.

Frequently asked

What is the Vimshamsa chart used for?
Spiritual practice and devotion - the form a practice takes, and progress in it. It is the chart behind ishta-devata work.
Can the D20 tell me which deity to worship?
It indicates an inclination and the form a practice naturally takes, which is how the ishta-devata is traditionally derived. It cannot prescribe a faith, and the choice remains yours.
