Divisional charts

Rasi (D1) Chart (राशि)

The birth chart itself - the undivided sign positions every other divisional chart is derived from and judged against.

What the D1 chart is read for

The D1 is not really a divisional chart; it is the chart. Planets sit in the sign they actually occupy, and it describes the whole life at the level people recognise - body, temperament, the broad shape of events. Every varga below is a re-projection of these same longitudes, which is why a promise absent from the D1 cannot be manufactured by a favourable D9 or D10.

How the D1 is calculated

No division is applied. A planet at 17°42' Leo is in Leo, and the houses are counted whole-sign from the ascendant.

Reading it alongside the birth chart

The D1 is the reference, not a peer. The working order is: read the promise in the D1, then go to the varga that governs the question for detail and for strength. A planet strong in the D1 and weak in the relevant varga usually means the matter arrives but underdelivers; the reverse often means it arrives late, or through effort rather than ease.

What a divisional chart will not tell you

A birth chart is a map of tendencies with a timing layer on top, not a verdict. It needs an accurate birth time to be worth reading at all - the ascendant, and therefore every house, moves about a degree every four minutes.

Frequently asked

Is the D1 chart the same as the birth chart?
Yes. D1, rasi chart, janma kundli and birth chart all name the same thing - planets in the signs they actually occupy, with no division applied.
Why start with the D1 if the D9 is stronger?
Because the D9 refines what the D1 promises; it does not replace it. A marriage indication absent from the D1 is not created by the navamsa, and reading a varga alone is the commonest way people talk themselves into a conclusion the chart never made.
